False Promise is a painting from the community care series I produced. When I lived in a hostel for people with mental health we were promised all kinds of support and i found that they were all false promises.
I became more a more politically involved and aware of the things that go on behind closed doors in the hospital and community care setting where people are left to be isolated with no ongoing support.
I saw many beloved friends who did not have the ability to speak for themselves put on depot injections. I saw the side effects of this drug such as gross obesity, not being in touch with there feelings or surroundings and many of them being spaced out and not in touch with reality.
The promise of counselling and support often never happens to these individuals and with a lot of indivuals having no family to support them they are left with no voice or witnesses for the lack of care.
AS there is now no legal aid or advocacy to represents there rights and needs the services sell out people so they are no longer a person but a number which is no different from sending people to the gas chamber in my opinion.
Cheap option of depot drugging rather that giving community care and the right counselling and support as well as advocacy and legal aid which is now very limited leaves community care an invisible institution.
Hospitals have been sold and with constant cuts to mental health services and all care services and benefits the community care services are nothing but a silent killer.
