In the next in our series of Zoom Café events, where you can enjoy an online presentation by one of our arts partner organisations in the Midlands exploring aspects of their collections followed  by an interactive Q&A,  you will  have the chance to hear from Coventry Artspace and Hardish Virk. Hardish will be presenting about his work developing a South Asian project based on the Virk Collection at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum. His 20 minute input will be followed by provocations for the online audience and an informal Q&A on the themes discussed.  The event is taking place online at 11am on Friday 12 March.

Hardish  has been involved in the arts sector since the 1980s as a visual artist, actor, director, writer, producer, DJ as well as advising on audience and organisational development. Throughout this time, he has been interested in working with communities to expose hidden narratives and share human stories.

Equality is central to his work and is born out of the activist work of his parents, Bhajan Birk and Jasvir Kang who were also authors and archivists. Bhajan in particular was interested in collecting the stories of South Asian communities who had migrated to the UK and those who were British born, as he recognised the importance of documenting these stories so that they are not forgotten or lost. Bhajan would later go onto donating a significant part of his archive to the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum and can be found in the Coventry Collections.

Hardish is now working on a project to pull together his and his parents archive to tell the story of South Asian communities who made Coventry their home using photographs, articles, posters, books, magazines, audio and video materials. Using images from the collection, Hardish will speak about why these stories are important to tell, archive and exhibit.
