Why Step Up training?

Step Up training is Outside In’s training and professional development programme, offering those facing barriers to the art world the opportunity to gain new arts-sector skills. These skills include researching, interpretation, devising and delivering creative workshops, writing in response to art work, curating exhibitions and speaking confidently about art.

After participating in a course, people have gone on to take up paid and voluntary opportunities running their own creative workshops, giving talks about their research interests and delivering guided tours about a specific artist or theme.

What do other people say about Step Up training courses?

“I would definitely recommend Step Up to other people. The first thing I would say is that it’s great for your confidence, and it really helps you to collate and build a portfolio. It also gives you the confidence to work in other areas. Participants start defining themselves as artists, not just a ‘person that does art.’ It’s very inspiring and it has really informed my work. The academic side really excited me too – interpreting the collections at Pallant House Gallery and researching the archives, which I love”
