From the artist:
I am a potter just beginning to explore techniques outside of making functional wares. I have also struggled most of my life with a combination of mental health struggles, so I am continually seeking healing and understanding. This work combines the two elements of my life.
My primary diagnosis is Complex PTSD and because of that I have nightmares and flashbacks. The idea for this group of tiles came after a particularly hard week of both occurrences. Each tile takes on the main elements that tend to come together in my nightmares. Some of the tiles represent common locations and recurring themes. Others are a surreal combination that group things together even if they occurred at different times or stages in life. The narrative that is represented in each tile is significant in itself, but as a grouping they embody the core of my story and what makes me who I am today. To the people who know me best some of these elements are obvious, but others are more of a mystery.
I chose to make these as three dimensional tiles because it combines something I am comfortable with, tile making and decorating, and something outside of my comfort zone, sculptural elements and mixed media. Prior to COVID-19, I had been working out of a local studio called Chilli Studios that has allowed me to explore and expand my art and abilities, but since being on ‘lockdown’ I have felt like I am ‘winging it’ and letting my muse and my varying level of motivation and skill lead me where it might. This project, which is essentially sharing the essence of me, is a result of that more independent effort.
The tiles are fashioned out of terracotta clay and then decorated with various techniques. I have used underglazes, glazes, resist techniques to show raw clay in places and acrylic paints for highlights. All the tiles have some raw clay elements and some are more highly decorated than others. These have been ‘low-fired’ in a small kiln in my kitchen because of lockdown. I have learned a lot in the process of making and firing these pieces.
