Lesley Nimmo works in Project Ability’s Aspire programme painting her daily activities and surrounding commonplace objects. Her paintings feature thick applications of paint and are constructed by solid single brush strokes of hot pink, cobalt blue and bright orange drawing attention to the power of colour and with devoted attention to the repetition of her signature technique. Lesley often uses source material from National Geographic, her paintings mimic or alter the nature she finds in these starting points, capturing the essence of the image, often seeming half-complete and overlaying the raw outline of the subject. The delightful visual effect of Lesley’s paintings recalls slow processes and she captures the essence of a creature rather than its anatomical correctness; her subjects are often dandified with bold colour, flair, full plumage and a cheerful smile.
