From the artist:
I wanted to be precise with the measurement of squares within this square canvas so I devised a way of measuring without leaving a mark. Although I tested out the pattern of dots in my sketchbook before painting, I was open to responding to the marks I made rather than rigidly sticking to the plan. This allowed me to make 'mistakes' with spacing and you can see this in the white spaces - some are slightly different sizes and shapes. I also enjoyed the irregularity of dot size, which could also be viewed as 'mistakes'. I like that it reminds me of difference - all humans share the same genes and some of those are expressed differently in each human; therefore, pathologising difference makes no sense.
I feel happy when I look at the painting from a distance or without my contact lenses or glasses (I am shortsighted) - the colours merge and the yellow feels golden like sunlight. You can also achieve this effect by wearing reading glasses to look at the painting if you have good eyesight. I'm interested in how our brains mix colour in this way.
It's an act of meditation to paint in this way, which is soothing and/or mindful, depending on what's going on in my head.
