Constellation (2009)

By Julia Fry

Width: 50Height: 60

From the artist:

Acrylic on canvas.

I came home from work one evening in 2007 feeling frustrated and annoyed, grabbed the nearest canvas, which was painted in a block dark red and threw black paint at it, smearing it all over until no red showed; then I used my finger to draw the humanoid figure sitting on a chair.

The dots came much later, without rhyme or reason, after the painting had lain aside for many months; the hours I spent adding them allowed me to notice my busy mind and not act on thoughts I might usually have acted on (because I was committed to painting in those moments), which was illuminating. You might say the humanoid figure looks like a Buddha.
