The act of drawing has always been an essential part of my work whether it be for an embroidered piece or a painting. Internal and external worlds inform my work and I often seek to combine the two in some way. The imaginative starting block for much of my work comes from a pocket sized sketchbook of drawing and writing that’s usually a hybrid of observational and imaginary kind of magic realism.
Coming from a background in embroidery/textile design I often limited myself to black ink line drawing partly for the practical applications of designing for stitch. Over time the content of the design became more compelling for me as images in themselves. This has prompted me recently to rediscovering different media.
I find the the daily art practice is an anchor for mental wellbeing and certain noetic experiences come through making and observing that bring healing, joy and meaning into my life. I have used a variety of approaches to try and communicate this experience of liminal worlds including info graphs inspired by sacred geometry and dream like figurative drawings.
