From February to June 2016, Pallant House Gallery‘s courtyard garden was covered in colourful knitting and crochet creations. The work was produced during drop-in workshops in late 2015, with lead artist and Outside In Ambassador, Julia Oak.
The project grew out of Julia’s participation in the Outside In: Step Up Interpreting Collections programme, which provides artists with the training and support to develop their research and interpretation skills. The vibrant installation was a celebration of textiles and texture, and ran parallel to Outside In’s fourth open submission exhibition at the Gallery, ‘Radical Craft: Alternative Ways of Making.’
The workshop sessions were non-prescriptive and enabled people to learn new skills in knitting and crochet, whilst building confidence in individuals and creating connections with local community groups.
Outside In would like to thank the following groups for their contribution to the project:
Aldingbourne: Creative Art Studio and Earthworks, Chichester Lunch Club, Pallant House Gallery’s Community Programme, Starburst Arts, and WRAP at The Boys Club.
And the following volunteers for their time and expertise:
Becky McCardle, Janet Beckett, Judith Martin, Kate Simms, Linda Nevill, Mary Shrewsbury, Myrtle Clark Bremer, Peter Baker, Rhoda Robinson, and Sue Attridge.
