The Studio at Pallant House Gallery
1 September – 30 October 2016
Outside In was delighted to welcome 17 of its past Award Winners back to Pallant House Gallery to mark the project’s 10 year anniversary.
The exhibition highlighted not only the journey these Award Winners have been on since being selected by judges from one of Outside In’s four triennial open art exhibitions, but also how Outside In has been pivotal in supporting their artistic development. Many of our Award Winners have work included in art collections around the world such as Manuel Bonifacio’s work in the Collection de l’Art Brut in Lausanne.
The exhibition, which took place in the Studio at Pallant House Gallery, featured work by: Peter Andrews, Phil Baird, Manuel Bonifacio, Kate Bradbury, John Cull, Peter Cutts, Kwei Eden, James Gladwell, Dannielle Hodson, Andy Hood, Joel Howie, David Jones, Carlo Keshishian, Nigel Kingsbury, Jasna Nikolic, Michelle Roberts, and Matthew Sergison Main.
Joel Howie, one of five Award Winners in 2007. He said of winning the award that: “It made me realise what was possible and it gave me the confidence to strive for what I wanted to do – painting.” Since his win, Howie went on to secure Arts Council England and DADA funding for an accessible studio, and exhibited with his ‘Partner in Art’ Barbara MacFarlane in several exhibitions.
Carlo Keshishian, one of the six 2009 Award Winners, has a similar success story. He said: “It should go without saying that directly, and indirectly, my career has been impacted in regards to the awareness of my work being more prevalent.” Keshishian was offered a solo exhibition at the Otter Gallery, Chichester, as a result of his win, and went on to exhibit in Beirut, Lebanon, and the Palais de Tokyo and Carousel du Louvre in Paris. His work was used to illustrate the cover of artist, academic and writer David Maclagan’s book ‘Line Let Loose: Scribbling, Doodling and Automatic Drawing.’
